2022 Yarmouth Clam Festival

A summertime tradition for this Maine town, this festival gathers people from far and wide to a small town center a few miles north of Portland. Bike racing is a small part of this festival, taking place on the morning of the final day of a three-day affair filled with community events. The course features a healthy amount of elevation—roughly 1500ft in 35 miles of racing. But here’s the stuff we most care about: primes every lap!

After rolling three-woman breakaways in the previous two races, I came into Clamfest hoping to get off the front in a small group. I knew Gina and Kendall would be attacking every lap, so I was extra-attentive and ready to cover anything so I didn't miss out. In retrospect, I may have been a bit too eager to push as hard as I could to follow each of their moves. We did 7 ~40 second efforts up the finishing hill (plus coverage of some bonus attacks!) and while we whittled the field down to 7 riders in total, we couldn't get it much smaller than that. The lights started to feel like they were going out the penultimate time up the hill, and in the finale I fully imploded, limped across the line for 6th, and then went to lay down underneath a tree for a bit until I stopped feeling like my body was shutting down.

Big man, big hill. Many lap. Many hill. Strong men. Quick drop. Allez Sprint fast. Maybe next race.
