Volunteers

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Purgatory Road Race! Green Line Velo LOVES our volunteers because they are the raddest, most awesome people we know and they're the secret to Purgatory's success.  If you’re interested in helping out, you can sign up here, or read on for more information.

If you have questions, please ask!  You can reach us at marshals@greenlinevelo.com.  We’d love to hear from you.

Purgatory Volunteers

A few basics about the race:
The course is run over an 11 mile loop, and we can run 3 fields of racers on the course at one time (we separate each field by 5 minutes at the start, and make sure that the fastest group is the first to leave).  There are 3 waves throughout the day, meaning that there will be nine separate races in total.

Road marshals act as ambassadors for the Purgatory Road Race. As a road marshal, your goal is to make sure competitors have a safe race while providing a point of contact for motorists and the general public. Remember, bicycles are quiet, and some riders will be detached from the main group, so you should listen at all times for oncoming racers.

General responsibilities for road marshals:
   - Direct & usher participants safely through various intersections on the course
   - Work with law enforcement at intersections where a traffic right-of-way is being modified
   - Communicate with race personnel

Where/when to arrive:
We will have three shifts for road marshals throughout the day which correspond to the three race waves.
   - Shift 1 starts at 7:00am (We'll have breakfast from Dunkin Donuts)
   - Shift 2 starts at 10:30am
   - Shift 3 starts at 2:00pm

The address for parking and race headquarters is 409 Boston Road, Sutton, MA. (Look for the signs as you arrive).

All road marshals will meet by the flagpole in front of the school at the start of the day. If you're volunteering later on, you can check in at the registration area inside the school. We'll need to go over a number of important things as well as hand out vests and radios, so it’s important that everyone arrives on time.

Purgatory VolunteersLunch:
If you’re doing a partial day of volunteering, we’ll have an array of sandwich options (vegan as well) after the first shift at 11:00am.  If you stay on course between the first and second waves, we’ll bring lunch out to you at your post during the second shift.
